Design for Biodiversity

A blank canvas, a modest budget, and a pile of blocks & rocks to recycle!… and a desire for a Design for Biodiversity and Native Planting, and a flat area for a swing with a viewing seat, and a social firepit area.

A pile of blocks and a designer cogitating!
A blank canvas to play with!
The clearance begins and a quagmire ensues! The joys of a starting a build in winter!
Firepit area dig out under way! If only we had access for a digger, albeit it would get stuck!
Swing area and viewing area prepared, and plant beds taking shape
Spring arrives and the block work and planting commence!
Planted swing area from the viewing seat
Planting and rock recycling completed!… watch this space as these plants grow & flourish

The Garden is designed in a Natural style with an emphasis on biodiversity & native planting, to encourage wildlife into the garden. It offers a family & wildlife friendly space, a place to have fun, relax & recharge whilst being multifunctional and collaborative, providing continuity and harmony throughout.

A Design for Biodiversity was key, and hence most of the existing wild lawn was left well alone!

Around the edge of the garden are ‘pockets’ of hedgerows, mini wildlife sanctuaries consisting of a carefully chosen collection of plants providing height, depth & texture, encouraging wildlife & biodiversity. In between these pockets, the grass verges are embellished with some wildflowers & grasses & left to naturalize. This creates some interest & privacy without forming a dense wall all around the garden. There is also a Stumpery creating another habitat for mini beasts & a source of curiosity for children.

The planting throughout the rest of the garden is colourful & fragrant, encouraging wildlife & biodiversity. There is a mixture of shrubs, perennials & grasses with some self-seeding annual plants, both evergreen & deciduous.
